How to Study in Australia for a Semester or More

During the 1980s, America fell in love with Australia. Movies like Quigley Down Under, Crocodile Dundee, and The Man From Snowy River were released. What people found out through this was that the American and Australian cultures were very similar. At the same time, however, there were some differences between those two cultures, but those were seen as interesting and quirky. Unsurprisingly, a lot of people now want to study abroad in Australia.

Today, Americans continue to be interested in Australia and, as a result of the movie trilogy The Lord of the Rings, they are now also becoming interested in New Zealand. There is something special about walking in the scenery of New Zealand, which is nothing short of spectacular. The most southern regions of this country look like the Pacific Northwest when it comes to its climate, fauna, and geology.

Both Australia and New Zealand are parts of the old British Empire. In fact, they are still part of the British Commonwealth. If you want to study abroad in Australia as an American, you will quickly find that you will feel very comfortable there, because so much is familiar. But at the same time, you will really feel like you’re in a foreign country, somewhere exotic, particularly when it comes to the culture. What is really unique is the flora and fauna there, mainly due to the geological separation from the Asian continent several million years ago. As a result of this, there are lots of animals and plants in Australia that you cannot find anywhere else.

New Zealand is equally unique. The north is tropical in temperature, flora and fauna, whereas the south is more temperate. Furthermore, in New Zealand, you can meet the Maoris, which is one of the eldest civilizations in the Polynesian region. Their civilization has existed for more than seven centuries, if not more.

Studying abroad is now so popular that it has been made easy for you. There are lots of universities and colleges in both Australia and New Zealand that are all too happy to take on exchange students. However, although it is easy, you do have to plan properly for it.

Planning to Study Abroad

If you want to study in Australia or New Zealand, you should:

  1. Find out what the program’s application deadline is. Different institutions have different deadlines. Try to start your planning between nine and 12 months in advance.
  2. Make sure you have an acceptable GPA. A 2.5 is generally the minimum requirement, but those with a higher GPA are even more desirable.
  3. Check that the credits you complete can count towards your degree in this country.
  4. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months after the end of your journey to Australia or New Zealand.

With these four steps, you will make sure that your trip to Australia or New Zealand will be one that you will never forget. This is the opportunity of a lifetime!
